casco viejo | panama city
casco viejo, or old quarter, was the “second” panama city. the original city was burned during an pirate attack led by captain henry morgan [yes, the gentleman on which you were likely over-served in a college dorm room at some point] and was rebuilt a couple years later south of the original settlement on a peninsula. panama city has now spread miles north of casco viejo, and the beautiful buildings in the historic neighborhood are getting a major re-vamp. now there are countless charming hotels, residences, and cafes lining the brick streets.
we stayed at a small hotel in casco viejo and spent a lot of time exploring the neighborhood, popping into shops and restaurants, and walking along the water.
